History of Suriname 

Little of Surinames’ Pre Colonial era history is known. Humans have been in this area since 10,000 B.C.. Suriname was Mainly inhabited by hunter Gatherers until the Dutch arrived. In 1581 the Dutch arrived in suriname. Then traders began to colonize the region in the 17th century. Then the English gave their part of it for New Amsterdam. The Economy for a period of time was supported by slavery until its abolition in 1863. Then in 1975 Suriname gained its independence peacefully through the Dutch parliament.  In 1980 a successful military coup was staged. Political pressure forced the military to establish a civilian rule. The first president elected was Ramsewak Shankar. Later a second military coup was staged which was a bloodless one. Another election happened but since no party won â…” majority that was needed to choose the president, there was another election. The latest president was Chan Santokhi, he was inaugurated in 2020.

Suriname has a diverse population. The Most prominent ethnic group is South Asians, who are descendants of laborers from india. They came to Suriname to work. The second biggest ethnic group is Maroons. Maroons are descendants of escaped slaves. The third biggest group is the Suriname creole.
